Dinosaurs Long, Long Ago

 

It's International Dinosaur month and we're enjoying it Suzuki Style! I displayed books for my students about Dinosaurs from our studio loaning library. Book 1 Suzuki Piano students practiced the piece "Long, Long Ago". (I encourage students that are further along to use it as a review piece to work on changing the key signature as they work with their scales.) We used magnetic dinosaurs for challenging spots/measure that needed repetition. In the photo example above, the student is age 6 and was to repeat the measure 6 times. Each time that he performed it correctly, he placed a dinosaur to the right side of the tin with the volcano background. After the repetition of the one measure, students test their work by playing the full stanza. They understand that for homework, if they play the stanza correctly, they can continue on with the piece or to the next challenging spot. If they perform it incorrectly, they must do the repetitions again.

In the photos below, students are working on a dinosaur note and keyboard recognition puzzle. Students pieced the puzzle together by matching the correct notes or keys together. If the answers are correct, the dinosaur picture is revealed.

 

I found this cool Safari Ancient Fossils TOOB on Amazon as a fun way to work on note recognition for National Fossil Day! Students were to put the fossil on the correct key matching the flashcard.
